Documentation created before a loss can save time, support valuation, and reduce confusion after a disaster.

Photograph the property

Capture every room, closets, cabinets, garage, storage, exterior walls, roof from the ground, major systems, outbuildings, landscaping, and special features. Repeat the process after major purchases or renovations.

Build a home inventory

Record item descriptions, approximate purchase dates, serial numbers, receipts, and photos. Focus first on high-value and essential belongings. Store an encrypted backup outside the home.

Save property records

Keep roof invoices, permits, warranties, electrical and plumbing upgrades, mitigation reports, appraisals, inspections, and contractor information.

Organize insurance documents

Save declarations pages, policy forms, endorsements, agent and claim numbers, flood or wind policies, and mortgage information. Note which company handles which type of loss.

Protect the records

Use a secure cloud location, encrypted drive, or another safe off-site method. Do not rely on a single phone that could be lost in the same event.
