A premium comparison is incomplete unless the policies are meaningfully comparable.

Ask what policy form is being offered

Find out whether the dwelling and personal property are covered on open-peril or named-peril terms and which exclusions matter for the property.

Ask how losses are settled

Compare replacement cost, actual cash value, roof settlement, matching, cosmetic damage, depreciation, and recoverable-depreciation terms.

Ask about catastrophe deductibles

Calculate wind, hail, named-storm, hurricane, wildfire, earthquake, or other percentage deductibles in dollars.

Ask about optional protections

Water backup, service line, equipment breakdown, ordinance or law, scheduled valuables, identity fraud, home business, and extended replacement cost may not be automatic.

Ask about inspections and underwriting

Understand whether an exterior, interior, roof, electrical, plumbing, or occupancy inspection is expected and what happens if a condition is found.

Ask about the insurer and placement

Find out whether the insurer is admitted or non-admitted, which fees apply, whether there is a minimum-earned premium, and who handles service and claims.
