Read the notice immediately

A nonrenewal generally means the insurer intends not to continue the policy after its current term. It is different from a midterm cancellation. The notice should identify the effective date and may explain the reason.

Build a timeline

Write down:

  • Date the notice was issued
  • Policy expiration date
  • Mortgage or lender notification requirements
  • Repair or inspection deadlines
  • Time needed to obtain alternative coverage

Starting early protects more options. Do not wait until the final week.

Identify the exact reason

Common reasons include roof condition, property maintenance, claim history, catastrophe concentration, business changes, occupancy, pets, inspections, or a carrier's broader market withdrawal. The remedy depends on the reason.

Ask whether the decision can be reconsidered

If the concern can be corrected, ask what evidence the insurer requires and whether there is a deadline. Photos, invoices, permits, inspection reports, and claim-closure documentation may help. Reconsideration is not guaranteed.

Shop with a complete file

Provide accurate applications, current photos, prior declarations, claim information, and repair records. Withholding an issue can produce a late decline, cancellation, or claim dispute.

Protect the effective date

Coordinate the new policy so it begins before the old one ends. Confirm the binder or declarations page, notify the lender, and verify that the first payment clears.
